How to fish with Live Crickets: When you bait your hook with a cricket hold the cricket between your thumb and your first two fingers, apply only a small amount of pressure so the cricket holds still. Gently push the hook through the anus, just under the tail and have the hook come out of the throat (head). By hooking your cricket this way the fish has to bite the hard head off first. Do not cast the line far because you might lose your cricket. Lightly fling the line about ten to fifteen feet from shore or your boat, it will land on the top and slowly sink. Do not use a heavy hook or a sinker on the line it will bring the cricket it too far under the water. When you have a bite give your pole a quick snap back with your wrist, don't jerk your line, or you may pull the hook away from the cricket.
Cricket fishing can be challenging, take your time and get comfortable on how to correctly use crickets for fishing, and you will be rewarded with delicious fish.
Cricket Care: Store crickets in an aquarium, a cricket hotel or condo or some kind of holding box with egg carton flats for crawl space and to give them darkness. Keep the temperature between 65 to 85 degrees. Huddled crickets are too cold, dead, black or wet looking crickets are too hot. Make sure you clean their holding boxes between orders, with water only! Always have fresh water for them with either a watering set-up or for 1 to 2 week old crickets use a moist sponge. Feed them unmediated chicken feed or dry oatmeal.
Special winter care: DO NOT OPEN YOUR CRICKET BOX until you have warmed them overnight. Warm them near a heat source like a heater or heat vent. Warming them allows the crickets to recover from their hibernation. After they have warmed up overnight you can empty them into your holding box.
